Summary
“Feofan,” the Tsaritsa speaks. He meets her eyes, her beautiful, benevolent eyes suddenly so full of . . . guilt. She stands, and the Harbingers straighten their backs, hands already over their hearts. Feofan can only continue to lean against Pierro, but he bows his head still. Gracefully, she climbs down the stairs, until she’s right in front of him.
She cups his tear-streaked cheek, and says, “I’m sorry, my child. My beautiful Feofan.”
Feofan asks the Tsaritsa to kill him.

Summary
And there he is, small against the grassy expanse of their estate. Feofan rushes towards him, but the tank hinders him. Watching him struggle, Zandik starts running, and finally they collide—disastrously, cosmically. Zandik swoops him up in his arms, careful not to squeeze him. Their bodies coil around each other, locked in an embrace impossibly tight but gentle.
Feofan laughs, a true laugh. It resounds in an echo in his lungs, a sweet melody bouncing off those ashy walls.
“Zandik!” he says, delighted.
Feofan is dying.

Summary
Yet he is here, standing before what is by all means a monster.
“What are you?” Pantalone repeats, at last—a fissure, the arc of a blade, the final convergence.
“Human,” Dottore answers. The crescent imprint of their flame plays along the diameter of his irises, bright and scorching. “I am painfully human.”
Pantalone is tasked with seeking and returning Il Dottore after his segments perish, no matter how long he must take to convince him. Amidst bloodshed and prayer comes a realization: it turns out Dottore is hiding far more than he seems.
(Or: an exercise in equivalent exchange.)
