Escaping from Ba Sing Se does not go to plan, like not at all. How are they supposed to defeat the Fire Lord and save the world if the Avatar is dead.
That is the moment when the spirits decide Sokka is worth paying attention to, they give him a second chance to fix this and find a way out where Aang does not end up dead.
What Sokka does not expect is being sent back in time to when they first arrived in Ba Sing Se, or the fact that no one else seems to remember they have already lived this, or the fact that getting it right might take more than a couple tries. “Don’t you explore the other on campus cafes?” Zuko can’t help but ask one day as Sokka approaches, which seems to catch Sokka off guard. “There’s one by that physics building.”
“Now why would I check those out?” Sokka asks with wide eyes, before his lips form that coy smile. “Why would I bother when I know I can see you at this one?” Zuko holds back a groan.
“What do you want.” He asks, more of a statement than a question, which makes Sokka clutch his chest dramatically.
Or: Zuko works at an on-campus cafe and Sokka is an Engineering student who's made it his mission to come to this exact location almost every single day. Why? Zuko doesn't know. All he knows is that Sokka is sometimes a pain in his ass. And he's kind of.. nice too.

Summary
I was just thinking, the SBPD must have missed a ton of things before Shawn started working with them. So many murders dismissed as accidents, cold cases waiting to be solved, ect.
So, during a bout of ADHD insomnia, Shawn heads to the police station in the middle of the night to take a solo look at the records room. He wasn't expecting, however, for Lassie to find him. Maybe he won't be flying solo after all.
