“Octavio, check the basement. I’ll go upstairs. Goldie, take the perimeter.” Ruze hears himself order as his mind quickly sorts through the barrage of visual information.
The room is trashed. It’s a mess of wood splinters and toppled furniture, there’s an obvious dark stain on the floorboards that all of them recognize as blood splatter. Jurard is nowhere to be seen.
Both nod; Octavio’s fingers already threading through his weapons with inhuman precision and Goldbullet’s eyes roam, restless and sharp, searching for a target. The Armis unit knew when a situation demanded their best.
And the bloodstain on the floor demanded everything they had to give.

He stands in the doorway for a moment, taking in the sight of the carnage with indifference. It had never affected him, bodies were bodies after all. Human or not, they were just meat and bones and blood at the end of the day and Ruze couldn’t find it in him to see them differently. Jurard though… Jurard was breathtaking. Savage and almost otherworldly; he looks like a twisted dream as he rips the human carcass apart.
Sighing fondly, he breaks the silence. “You greedy son of a bitch. Couldn’t even wait and say hi?”

Sorting through Lord Death’s personal archives, Kid finds drawings, trinkets—and an old, redacted file about Spirit. But one thing is off: it doesn’t actually say “Spirit” Albarn. Spirit admits he changed his name as a teen. It all started with a fire, he says, after his and Stein’s indoor-smoking escapade came to an abrupt (and dangerous) end.
Kid expects another chaotic student-time story. Spirit tries to keep it that way. It’s just—Kid doesn’t laugh.
With Spirit as Kid’s last real link to Lord Death, Kid still pushes for answers—gently but relentlessly—and Spirit finds his poorly glued-together clown-mask cracking. And Stein, who’s never been much fooled by Spirit’s antics, is torn between staying out of it and holding the pieces together.
Set after Emotional Support Himbo: Please Don’t Ask How He’s Doing and Applied Apologetics: A Field Guide. Very few direct references, but the characters’ bonds are written accordingly.
