Alastor's breaths came shallow. His hands shaking against the cane gripped tight in his palm. He didn’t know where he was. It was humid, much too humid for him to be in the bayou, even on the summer afternoons. His mind was clouded and his skin too tight. Only one thought was coherent in his head. Hungry.
He was so hungry.

"That’s right." Harvey sipped his drink, enjoying the way the burn settled on his tongue. "If I were working right now, you wouldn’t know it. You’d just think I was completely focused on you."
She tilted her head. "Are you? Focused on me?"
He was supposed to say yes. Instead, something in his chest gave the smallest, traitorous twist. The wrong face flickered in his head, the wrong eyes, blue and earnest and always, somehow, there. He shoved it down, smirked wider, and leaned in. "Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?"
Julia held his gaze like she didn’t quite buy it, then let it go, swirling the wine in her glass. Harvey went to finish his own drink, but when the liquor hit his stomach, it felt heavier than it should have.

John doesn't know he's asleep until he wakes up, cheek pressed to the cold tile, curled up and shivering. He doesn't know he's hurt until he takes a breath, and then suddenly every muscle is spasming with the shock of some undiscovered injury. The back of his head. his nose. His stomach. His chest.
Where is he? He isn't certain. He's certain of nothing right now except the fact that he is in pain.
