    Her mother only managed a gasp, her eyes filling with tears.

    Luz swallowed the bitter pills of all her feelings. She’d already made her mother cry.

    Despite the disaster inside her, Luz forced a smile onto her face—her mother deserved at least a smile, after all Luz had done. “Hey, Mom…” She forced out. Tears were trying to surge from her eyes, her voice turned shaky with the threat of sobs.

    “I’m back…!”

    They were thrown into the human world, left stranded from their loved ones. None of them are ok but they have to get home, no matter how long it takes.

    (This fic expands on the scenes shown in the Thanks to Them intro). Their arrival in the human world, their first attempt at a portal. Shopping and cooking shenanigans. All the while, Luz is drowning in her guilt over secrets she can’t spill, Hunter is terrified of who—or what—he might be, Amity is trying to hold it together, Willow’s trying to hold everyone together, and Gus is trying to convince his friend that he’s safe.

    The tablet hits the hard floor with an echoing clank- but it doesn’t shatter.

    Part of Hunter really wants to break down sobbing right now. He resists the temptation and reaches for the tablet. As soon as his fingers brush against its surface, chills erupt across his skin. A strange yet familiar voice suddenly echoes in his mind- childlike laughter.

    Hunter’s stomach drops as he realizes where he knows the voice from, snatching his hand back instantly.

    But he can’t undo it.

    The tablet glows bright blue, and something slithers out of it.

    Luz doesn’t trade places with Hunter, and he ends up facing Emperor Belos alone. Cast off and left for dead, Hunter’s out of options until he meets the Collector, who makes him an offer he can’t refuse.
