Being a prince meant a lot of extremely unwanted duties, like upholding the (terrible) family name, attending awkward parties, and being forced into an arranged marriage.
And yeah, sure, the princess was probably a nice girl and all, but here's the thing--Shouta was not in love with anybody of royal blood, but rather, the annoying bard (ahem, musician) he'd met when he was a kid and had unfortunately fallen for. Equally as unfortunately, nobody was really all that accepting of the gay thing. Not in this kingdom, at least.
So what was the best course of action? Learn magic (illegal), run away with his boyfriend (even more illegal) and perhaps fight a few evil bastards along the way.
(And also maybe meet a few weird kids, including a witch who can't keep her feet on the ground, an overzealous knight, a REALLY friendly dragon, and a berserker who likes the 'berserk' part of his title too much.)
