Summary
Cal dreams that he is dying. There is a blaster bolt through his chest, right where his scrappers’ rigging ends. He dreams that he is dying and alone, on some distant planet beneath unfamiliar stars. It is painful until it’s not. It is warm and cold and dark and bright and everything and nothing. And he’s alone. His friends, his family, are out there, somewhere, in the great big galaxy, and he doesn’t know if they’re safe or not, and he’ll never know because he is dying. He can’t be dying. He has promises to keep, people to see, an Empire to topple. He can’t let the Empire outlive him. But those unfamiliar stars stretch endlessly above him, and he’s still alone, with a hole in his chest, and it hurts so much. He can’t do this alone.
