Summary
With the numbers in the wizarding world diminishing rapidly the Ministry of Magic has seen fit to implicate a new system to ensure that young witches and wizards are finding their soulmates. Before the start of their eighth year at Hogwarts each witch and wizard receives a charmed mirror that will lead them to their matches. Draco Malfoy is less than thrilled when Reflection Day comes the day before the start of eighth year and all of his classmates begin to pair off, but he's even more disgruntled when he seems to have received a malfunctioning mirror. His mirror remains blank; his classmates chatter about how they can see their soulmates room, and yet all Draco sees when he looks in the mirror is himself. Finally, one day, as he staring into the mirror a face looks at him back. Weeks go by, and Draco can only ever see the girl in the mirror sporadically throughout the day, sometimes only fleetingly. No matter what he does, it's like she has no idea he's there. Until one day he over hears another classmate talking about their defective mirror, and a mysterious girl looking back at him.

"Thank you, Professor Umbridge, for that illuminating speech. As I said before, we have two and a half changes to the staff, and we are pleased to announce an assistant has been added to our staff. Professor Snape, as it is only fair after letting Professor Umbridge speak, and given the popular demand expressed earlier, would you like to make the formal introduction yourself?"
"I, Severus Tobias Snape, Master of Potions bronze level in good standing with the potioneer’s guild, Master of the Dark Arts fully registered and licensed to operate in all territories under the ICW, junior mediwizard, have taken as my apprentice Lord Harry James Potter, to guide in life and magic and work to further magical advancement," the announcement was met with gasps and chatter, but accompanied by much more enthusiastic applause than what Umbridge had received. Malfoy's jaw was hanging open, Zabini looked pale, Ron and Hermione were applauding loudly while the twins sang 'for he's a jolly good fellow.' At the Ravenclaw table, Boot was turning this way and that excitedly while Mandy was laughing through her applause.

An elated mood permeates through the wizarding world, but one wizard is not happy. One wizard whose plans have been foiled. He knows Tom will one day rise again, and little Harry Potter will have to vanquish him for good. Years of meticulous planning down the drain just because of one unforeseen little detail. James and Lily Potter were not meant to survive.

Children’s hair sometimes changes color as you grow. When he’s young enough for it not to be unusual, but old enough to know he’ll get in trouble for doing something ‘freakish’ again, Harry's hair goes from his father's dark locks to his mother's bright, most-likely-magical red hair.
It changes everything about who he identifies with, who he wants to grow up to be, and who he thinks he is. Instead of having James Potter as his idol, Lily turns out to be a much better influence.
So instead of seeing a scruffy, most-likely-muggleborn boy standing beside him in Madam Malkin's before their first year, Draco only has eyes for the scarlet-haired, green-eyed creature who just walked into his life.
