Summary
Sam is reeling after Eileen shows up, alive and totally unscathed, at the Winchester’s door. He’d seen her dead with his own two eyes, but apparently that’s just another one in the cruel string of fake-outs, near misses, and actual deaths his life has become these past thirteen years. He should be grateful that she’s alive, and he certainly is, but now he’s faced with the a reality that is somehow even worse. He’s still got feelings for her, and his drive to make sure she doesn’t wind up actually dead this time are putting a damper on whatever chance he thought they could have had at a real relationship. He doesn’t doubt her abilities, but he has no idea if he’s strong enough to make that leap.

“Wait,” she sees Sam gasp behind them, struggling to his feet, “wait!”
The spirit turns, and the hold on Eileen immediately loosens. She falls to the ground, knees buckling, and sucks in gasps of air. Sam appears at her side, hands smoothing over every inch of her. When he finds nothing wrong, he helps her to her feet, hands steadying her by the elbows.
The spirit’s eyes clear, watching them, and it’s only then that Eileen lets Sam take her full weight.
Finally, the spirit—Jess, because it is Jess now—says, “Sam?”
Eight months after they save the world, Eileen meets Jess.

He strides over just in time to see the figure take shape into someone Sam recognizes. She looks exactly the same as Sam remembers: short black hair, a strong build, and a preference for dark clothes. Sam spends the moment before Soledad notices him staring at the side of her face. He doesn’t have to see the whole thing to make out the soft, milky warmth in her eyes as she gazes at Eileen. Her whole body leans toward her, an open parenthesis.
Then she sees Sam, and she tenses like a strung bow.
“Who’s this guy?” she demands.
Four months after they save the world, Sam meets Eileen's ex.
