“Are we having this conversation right now?” he asks, voice soft. Not annoyed. Just careful. Like he’s gently checking the temperature of the air between us.
“Yes, we are,” I say as I put down my cup and cross my arms tightly over my chest. It looks defensive, but it feels more like a shield against the weight in my ribcage. I just need to hold myself together, literally—because I feel like if I don’t, something in me might come loose.
He nods slowly, “Okay.”
He doesn’t say more, just waits, letting the silence stretch in that patient way he does when he knows I need time to get the words out.
I shift from one foot to the other. The weight of the room feels heavier than it should. Outside the window, the hum of the city fills the space between us, faint but steady, like a quiet pulse reminding me of all the things that aren’t Linfield.

Summary
Waning Bay isn’t exactly a top destination on travel blogs, but it’s clearly peak season here, and its tourist potential is on the rise. I could almost hear Swapna, my former boss, saying “Inspired” in my ears. And immediately take back what she’s said if she saw our low budget itinerary.
On the streets, people weave in and out of restaurants, shops, and cafés, or just linger around talking and being approached by the occasional street vendor. Some head toward the pier on foot, others ride bikes or gather around gigantic cars playing music in the distance. And still, somehow, the sound of the wind and the waves manages to drown out everything else, making the whole thing feel ironically peaceful.
It’s nowhere near as packed as New Orleans, but there’s a similar feeling in the air. That sense of aliveness. Of being surrounded by people who very much want to feel alive too.
