Then there’s Neteyam. Silence brewing as he looks straight ahead beyond the fire where the Olo’eyktan’s family sits.
‘Are you seeing this?’ Jake moves his eyes between them.
Neytiri chuckles like he’s excluded in an undisclosed group secret. “Oh, you don’t even know.”
Slowly, in a series of events, Jake realizes that Neteyam and the son of the Metkayina Olo'eyktan's friendship is more than what he thought it was.
To be fair, both he and Neteyam are still figuring it out, but neither knows they both have an equal idea.
Because Neteyam hasn't even fully realized how much Ao'nung meant to him yet.

Pete kisses him open-mouthed, pushing his tongue in Ray’s mouth, elbow pressed against the mattress. He feels Ray’s hand snake across his arm, thinking he’s distracted with the kiss, in an attempt to take the camcorder in his grip. Pete pulls away and looks at Ray’s pink cheeks. “Ah, ah.”
Focus on me, Ray thinks. It’s been weeks since their last playhouse date. Pretending to be lovers, then wiping the slate the next time they meet. He doesn’t know why he still stays in this arrangement. A speck of desperation shows up in his voice. “Please.”
Pete puts the camcorder down. "Okay, baby."
Or: Pete wants to record Ray while having sex, and Ray figures things out about himself, slamming Pandora’s box open.

Summary
In an effort to make amends, Ao'nung saves Lo'ak during a nearing storm. He just wants Neteyam to look at him again, to have their friendship back. To have that warm presence near and undiminishing, like a habit that he fails to correct no matter the change. He misses him so badly.
Perhaps Eywa grants him a wish when they are forced to take shelter in an island not so far off, huddling close together for more than warmth: the truth.

Mike woke with a violent oof, all the air punching out of his lungs as a full-grown corporate attorney collapsed across his chest. His eyes flew open, disoriented, heart pounding, adrenaline firing like he was being attacked by a very well-dressed bear.
Then he smelled it.
