You felt sick to your stomach the moment the man, with his voice so soft and sweet and sure of himself, cut you down to the quick in one fell swoop. One stupid little sentence was enough to turn your heart to cracked ice, to squeeze your lungs until you feared they'd pop, to flip your stomach in on itself. Enough to make shame, thick and unbridled, boil in your very core. The conversation didn't last much longer after that, not after you'd downed your drink and left the bar top without another word, pointedly ignoring the man calling after you. Which led you here: outside, cold, damp from frustrated tears and thoroughly mortified.
What a fuckin' joke.
