    Summary

Ilya ignored the request from the NHL twice. The first time they asked through his agent, the second time the director of marketing called his personal number directly. He never got along with the league as a player, and he certainly didn't need to make them happy now.

The next attempt to reach him was harder to ignore. A phone call from an unknown number. A voicemail that made his blood run cold.

"Hi Ilya. This is Rose Landry. We've never met, but Shane speaks so highly of you. I think the NHL has been trying to get in touch. Shane said you probably wouldn't talk to them. But...think about it, ok? I know it would mean a lot to him."

The final request crumbled his resolve. The caller ID blinked "Jane," and Ilya stared at it.

Chronically Late by NotRamona43 is a lovely read. It's a canon-divergence where Shane and Ilya are estranged for a decade, but then Shane retires. It's a story about learning to hope and trust again. I really enjoyed the way wrote NotRamona43 wrote this; both Shane and Ilya have changed and grown over the decade they've been apart, but they are still fundamentally the boys who met at juniors.

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov has spent ten years circling Shane Hollander. Ten years of hotel rooms and secret phone calls. Ten years of pretending he doesn't feel it, doesn't need it, doesn't wake up reaching for someone who's already gone. Ten years convincing himself he's not good enough. That he's not worth it.

Then a plane needs to make an emergency landing near Montreal, and Yuna Hollander is on it.

So when Shane calls him from a bathroom floor, unable to breathe, Ilya stops pretending.

After five hundred miles of frozen highway, three and a half hours of driving like a man possessed, a hospital waiting room full of people who have every reason to hate him, and a boy who looks at him like he's something worth keeping, Ilya may have learned a thing or two about what it means to be loved—and to let himself love freely.

The Distance Between Us by Bruja_oscura is a really beautiful canon-divergent fic where the plane Yuna is on has an emergency landing and things do not look good for her. Shane is drowning and Ilya cannot let him sink. It's a really compelling read and I love the way all the realtionship in this are written.

    Summary

“I’m sorry,” Shane whispers against Ilya’s hair. “I’m so, so sorry. I didn’t—”

Shane cuts himself off with a faint stutter in his breath that Ilya feels in his own chest.

“Please,” Ilya begs, but he isn’t sure what he is even asking for.

He wants Shane to leave. He wants Shane to stay. He wants Shane to hold him and never let go.

Ilya feels Shane’s fingers fist in his curls, holding tight as if Ilya could ever bring himself to pull away.

Shane doesn’t know that Ilya could never, that he cannot fathom turning his back to take even one step away from him.

All he can do is push Shane away, make him walk first, and pick up the pieces left behind.

Or an alternative to that fight from the long game, but instead of Shane leaving as Ilya asks, they actually talk it out

i will choose you by whateveridk is a reimagining/canon-divergence of the fight in the Long Game where Shane decides to stay. It's really beautifully written. Full of emotions. It's also really hopeful.

    Summary

It figures that even half-way across the world Ilya's dick manages to ruin Cliff's day. The real surprise is that it isn't the only dick involved in this mess.

Featuring an ill-timed outing, a supportive but clueless team trying its best, panicking over Russia's LGBTQ laws, too many group chats, an unhinged 3am brainstorming session on how to get your captain a new citizenship (asking for a friend) and Roz' inability to answer his fucking phone.

Or: Ilya disappears in Sochi. Half-way across the world his team does its best to help. Their best is more than anyone could have foreseen.

Cliff's Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week (Is Probably Going Better Than Ilya's) by petroltogo is a brilliant read. Love the use of tweets and text conversations. Really enjoyed the outside POV. Canon divergent fic, Ilya gets outed whilst at Sochi.

He’s standing across from Ilya in his kitchen. Their feet are almost touching, Ilya’s in black socks that Shane also has multiple pairs of, Shane’s in his favourite soft striped ones. The rain is getting louder outside, moving from a drizzle to a downpour. And Ilya is looking at him like he loves him.

silver lining by ghosttotheparty is an utterly lovely read. It's so full of love and longing and hope. I love the way Shane and Ilya are written in this, and I love the way Yuna and David are too. The slight canon divergence works really well and allows ghosttotheparty to give us a glimpse into Shane and Ilya and shaneandilya.
