    Summary

The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.

    A child, I realize with a start.

    That’s a child!

“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.

“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.

    Used.

The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

How Grace finally gets back into a classroom, where he belongs

    Summary

Eddie has never flipped his phone over so fast. Chris looks up, eyebrows raised.

“Did Buck send you another snake picture?” he asks.

He can't say no, because Buck… Buck did. But not of a rattlesnake mid-strike this time. He sent an entirely different sort of snake. He nods, his throat too dry to speak.

Buck sends Eddie a nude. Eddie can't stop thinking about it.

    Summary

“I didn’t know,” she assures him.

    “You suspected.”

“Not for too long,” she shakes her head. “But the past few years, you… you’ve seemed… withdrawn, and… I’ve been finding you all these wonderful women, but even the women you have found yourself… I must say, it’s seemed as if you’ve been…”

“…performing? Playing a part?” Eddie finishes softly when she trails off for a moment too long.

“Holding your breath,” she says, instead. And… oh… there’s the third tear, and fourth—the fifth one burning in his waterline as he sniffles again, flaring his nostrils in an attempt to keep them at bay once again. Holding his breath. Yeah. Exactly. God, that’s exactly what he’s been doing. “And your Evan—your Buck…” she says, then, the corners of her mouth lifting knowingly; Eddie can’t help but let his own do the same. “The way he cooks, the way he hugs Christopher, the way he looks at you? The three of you together?” she takes his hand again, giving it another squeeze. “Such a beautiful family,” she says. “So much love.”

    Summary

Running to the frontlines from a childhood he never had. Taking a bat to the wall with his son in the next room. Having an affair with the spitting image of his dead wife.

Eddie knows he’s never been good at grieving, knows he’s never been good at losing what little he allows for himself in the first place. This is why he also knows his coping mechanisms can’t possibly get any worse.

Buck, as he so often does, makes him reevaluate his assumptions.

Evan Buckley dies behind a wall of glass. It’s a shame that when he’s revived not three minutes later, no one is informed.

    Summary

Chris remembers, suddenly, the days after his mom died, the feeling of dread that lingered under his skin. The way it slowly bubbled up, over the years, until he couldn’t be this kid anymore, this kid who could look at the world and not see danger in every corner. He wishes that Theo will never be like that. He knows, living with a first responder, that the odds of him turning out any other way are against him.

“Hey, Theo,” he says suddenly, the words spilling from his lips without permission. “Do you think Buck is your dad?”

Christopher isn't sure how he feels about Theo, or what he means for him and Buck. When they're caught up in a disaster alone, he has plenty of time to figure it out.
