Summary
It was strange, but part of John felt like he was experiencing the most gut wrenching breakup. Every time he came into proximity of Peter, he’d disregard him or barely even look at him long enough for them to hold a conversation. Sure, Peter’s always been terse especially with him but their relationship had started to develop into something more.

He’s appreciative of their praise, but it’s not the same. And he knows it’s silly, but he knows he would feel different — better about his save if it were Dr. Benton looking at him with the proud look that Carol and Mark were currently giving him. It’s not like he doesn’t respect them and their opinions; because he does.
It’s just that with Dr. Benton it means way more to him.

Summary
In his peripheral vision, Benton reaches out a hand to Carter. “You okay?”
Carter’s handle on his own zen washes away in a flood of heat. He has no control over his body—rage stabs him like an epidural, and he slaps Benton’s hand away.
Suddenly, Carter is sweating. It’s forty and windy, and Carter is out on his ass on the sidewalk, and his tongue is dry, and his palms are weak, and his sinuses are stinging with the effort to hold himself together, and he’s sweating, beads of it fresh on his forehead, and he’s gulping down breaths to stay steady.
“What,” spits Carter, “like you care?”
