When her back is turned toward him he’s talking again. “Your dad asked me to come talk to you.”

“Maybe we should tell somebody?” she asked as Carmy pulled out his wallet and checked his own driver’s license, confirming their shared address.
He shook his head. “I don’t think they’d believe us, Syd. Richie didn’t. I mean, would you believe us?” He held up his wallet. Inside the photo sleeve was a small picture of the two of them holding what appeared to be a newborn Gemma.
Sydney sighed, “No.”
She tried to imagine how it would go but in every scenario telling someone that everything about their lives was fake and wrong ended with one or both of them in psychiatric treatment and Gemma, their daughter in the care of others and not her unfit, delusional parents. When Carmy’s piece of shit father finally dies, the news doesn’t come through family. It’s through a lawyer. An older man with a painter’s brush mustache, a Saint Laurent checkered cashmere suit, and a Chopard on his wrist. The inheritance is clear, his ill-gotten estate is to be split between his remaining biological children. The only issue is the two clauses to the hefty windfall heading their way.
One - If any sibling can’t meet the standards of the clause, the other siblings can not share their inheritance or they forfeit their own.
Two - They must be legally married for at least one year before receiving their share.
When Carmy can see the dreams he’d be able to make a reality with that cash fade away he’d blurted out that he was engaged without thinking. Engaged to Sydney. The only issue with Carmy’s grand plan was Sydney hadn’t spoke to him since he left The Bear. Almost two years ago.

This added benefit to their relationship started six months ago. Carmy working in his signature fitted white tee, his muscles rippled from his biceps more than normally as he opened a jar for Sydney. She was in a tank top, braids gathered in a bun at the top of her head. His eyes trailed the sheen of sweat building on the smooth skin of her lithe neck and down the front of her décolletage. It wasn’t supposed to be sexy. She wasn’t trying to seduce.
“Why you staring at me?” Sydney looks up at him, brown eyes full of wonder, as he pulls her from the flour she was mixing.
“Why you staring at me?” He replied skin at the base of his neck immediately flushing with embarrassment at being caught by her.
“Nuh uh. I asked you first Carm. What’s up? Do I have something on my face?”
“No Syd. Not at all. Remember what I said about caring about everything more than anything.”
“Yeah of course. We’re getting that star.” She winked as she reached up to grab something else from his cabinets, her top rising up exposing the soft expanse of brown skin.
“But never more than you care about yourself. Are you taking care of yourself Syd?”

They’d have more opportunities in LA and she promised him one day they’d open another spot completely their own. He was down for it. He’d followed Syd to the ends of the Earth if it meant he got to love her and be the father to Stella that he never had. They traded everyone and everything they loved for this fake ass town with fake people and their bullshit palates, for social media fame and success. He fucking hated it. As much as he loved Sydney, their cushy life as influencers wasn’t what he signed up for and he missed the perpetual grind and energy of being in a commercial kitchen.

So I know this sounds fake but I don’t really care. I found this spell in an old book I checked out while I was in Andorra. It was of course in Catalan but I translated it. I said the words aloud and thought of who I’d wanna use it on and suddenly when I get back home my best friend is all over me. I don’t know how exactly it happened but it’s what I wanted so I’m fine with it. Don’t bother with the ethics, that’s not why I posted this. I just wanted to share the translation so here it is:
