Summary
Eastern Command is quiet in the way that it only ever is in the hours leading up to Remembrance Day. A rare treat, it is the one time each year that most Amestrian military officers are granted a three day weekend, and is so heavily anticipated that most of the higher-ranking staff members are already long gone for their out of town vacations.
Colonel Roy Mustang leans back in his chair and watches the sunset bleed orange across the far wall instead of finishing the stack of reports on his desk.
In his defense, the reports are boring.
In further defense, First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye is still here.

Summary
She shrugs; the tug, the stiff scar tissue of her left shoulderblade, is harder to tune out right now. Gingerly she turns his hand over. The flame alchemy array carved into his skin is almost unrecognizable - bisected, maimed by stitches, pulled back together so that its edges no longer line up neatly. Inert.
Hawkeye sighs through her nose. Sir, she could say - but no one is especially happy to hear her talk these days. Something about aggravating her healing throat. Something about the look on Mustang's face as he watches the bandages flex around her frail voice.
So she sighs, and she raises her eyebrows, and - mercifully - he chuckles.--
"The one thing worse than death is to avert your eyes from it. Look straight at the people you kill, don't take your eyes off them for a second. And don't ever forget them - because I promise that they wont forget you."
Riza is still looking back. Mustang? Mustang is looking at her.

“Welcome, sir,” she said very quietly, moving over to her small dining table to light a candle. She was shaking, fumbling for matches through the few drawers on the table.
“It smells like you here,” Roy noted, still standing near the door. He slowly made his way forward, proudly refusing to put his hands out in front of him to help navigate the unfamiliar space. Riza continued to fumble for matches. Her apartment had no windows, making it especially dark. “Hm?” Roy had noticed her frustrated motions, then chuckled in his all-too-familiar way. “What are you looking for, Hawkeye?”
“Matches,” she said simply. She wasn’t sure how to speak to him here.

"Roy directed his gaze to the big glass clock that reigned the entrance of Central Command. Its metal hands were seconds away from its apex point. He crossed the room with idle steps, with the intention of asking for the contact information of another officer in relation to a case at the reception. They were not relevant, the name nor the address. It was about being at the right place at the right time with the most innocuous motive to go unnoticed, or at least not be seen as a threat.
It was risky, but it was important. Too important. For the mission. And for him. At this point it was even close to disrespectful to not admit it, at least to himself."
Or, after a late phone call with Riza, Roy suspects that something is wrong and he needs to see her. And although something is indeed wrong, Riza proves him once again she is not one easy to defeat.
