Shu He’s throat tightened. He wanted to shout, to demand why his life was being traded so easily. But the hall was filled with the eyes of his brothers, amused, dismissive—and his parents’ stony silence.
But he knew there was no point. The decision was already made. His desires did not matter.
Instead, he bowed again, “Yes, Your Majesty.” His voice trembled despite his effort.
