    The thing is Shane has always had a hard time navigating social interactions. Not that he is necessarily bad at it, it’s just he sometimes says whatever is on his mind without realising how it might sound to other people. His best friend Rose calls it “refreshing”. Shane is not sure he agrees with that assessment, not sure he understands what it is that he is not supposed to say.

     

    Or, four times Shane accidentally flirted with people and the one time it wasn't an accident.

    Ilya props himself up on his elbow, facing Shane. “Hmm, that may be true. But maybe I will just keep fucking every person on earth and never find someone I will love. I will end up alone too. We’re both hopeless."

    “I don’t want you to end up alone, Ilya. I don’t want either of us to.”

    “How about this, solnyshko? If neither of us are married by 35, we marry each other.”

    OR, Shane and Ilya make a pact at 17 that if they aren't married by 35, they will marry each other. At 35, Ilya shows up to Shane's house to follow through.
