Shane hadn’t shown up to the party.
In his drunken state, the thought weighed heavily on him. He hadn’t seen Shane since practice yesterday, but more importantly, he hadn’t seen Shane in months. They ignored each other in the locker room, were tense on the ice, and only interacted when Coach Wiebe made them. They had gotten into an awkward, mechanical rhythm since September, when they had to start this game of pretend.
Ilya shut his eyes for a moment, leaning against the wall in the den to steady himself. Obviously, he wouldn’t show up, Ilya thought, tilting his head back. Why would he?
There was no answer that he could give that made sense. Shane hadn’t spoken to Ilya unless necessary since June, and even before that, Shane had never wanted to be a partygoer.

Ilya is frat president and hockey co-captain at U of Montreal, Shane is the other co-captain and NOT a frat boy. Their sneaking around over the years has gotten them into a tangled mess. set in an AU post-tuna melt scene, Ilya has the crash out of a lifetime when he realises the only person he wants at his frat parties is Shane and will do anything to get him at one.

“I could give you a massage, if you want,” he hears Ilya say, and his brain stops.
“What?” Shane is sure he didn’t hear that right, but he wants to make sure.
“You said your back hurts, I can give you a massage. I’m good at it,” Ilya says the words like they mean nothing, like the mental image of him on top of Shane and massaging his sore muscles with his bare hands isn’t currently making Shane’s brain short circuit.
He can’t possibly accept this and risk giving himself away. Shane has been in love with him for years and as much as it hurts, he knows Ilya doesn’t feel the same.
“Okay, sure.”
or, Shane takes Ilya up on his offer to give him a massage. Nothing could go wrong, right?

Summary
Everything would be so different. The kids on the other side of the door didn’t speak Russian; they spoke English and maybe French. He only knew a couple of isolated words and some sentences his Mama had taught him, like “my name is Ilya”, “I am from Russia”, “I am six years old”, “my favorite color is red”, and… “can me go to bathroom?”...? Yeah, that’s probably it. The point is: he didn’t know how to say much in English. He could barely begin to imagine what making friends would be like.
OR: As lifelong friends, Ilya and Shane navigate growing up together, increasingly aware of the unspoken truths that grow heavier the closer they get to the world of professional hockey.
