Sometimes, James gets this look on his face. Like when he sees Sarah, he’s rediscovering something. It’s the expression of a man who’s forgotten some dire, consequential part of being human, and is just now remembering. It fades into something fond, and grateful, and soft. “You have never made me feel uncomfortable. I’m not entirely convinced you could. I meant it—go ahead and ask. Whatever you want to know.”
Sarah chews on her words for a second. The kettle goes off, which thankfully gives her something to do with her hands. She takes the box from James, sets a bag in the mug, and pours hot water into it. When she goes to hand it back, she pauses and finally says, “You’re really good with the kids.”
