Suddenly, they both froze, staring at each other with wide eyes.
“...You...You can talk now…” Jiang Cheng whispered, mortified.
“...Mn...” Lan Wangji was floored.
Jiang Cheng had unknowingly broken the spell.

“Psst. Lan Wangji.” Jiang Cheng whispered, discreetly nudging his brother-in-law who was also sitting at his table. Jiang Cheng knew him well enough to tell that Lan Wangji was just as bored as he was, though it was far less obvious on his blank face.
“Mn?” Lan Wangji answered, trying his best not to take his eyes off Sect Leader Yao, and feign paying attention.
“I’ve noticed there’s always these two asshole cultivators that bad-mouth pretty much everybody at these Conferences.” Jiang Cheng hissed.
Lan Wangji paused, perplexed, “...Really?”
Jiang Cheng vigorously nodded. “I’ve heard them multiple times!”
“Who are they?” Lan Wangji asked urgently, glancing around the room to seek out the perpetrators.
“Me and you.”

“What do you mean stop panicking?!” Jiang Cheng grabbed onto Lan Wangji’s shoulders and started manically shaking him back and forth. “We just murdered a Sect Leader!”
Lan Wangji looked down at Sect Leader Yao who lay motionless on the forest floor and then back at his brother-in-law. “Maybe he’s just resting.”
Jiang Cheng shot him an incredulous look, so Lan Wangji tried again.
“He may still be alive, just unconscious...”
