Hubert balked.
"I don't understand." He did understand. He did, and he did not.
It was the same kind of whistle Edelgard kept under her armour, clasped around her neck on a silver chain. The one Byleth had gifted her. When she'd promised Edelgard a wedding, for when all of this was done.
"l don't want you to. And I don't want an answer. I just need you to have it. I've wanted you to have it since the start of this all." Her voice didn't waver. Her expression never changed. Blank. Despondent. Tired.
"So it's done."
This was something lovers did. This was something people who loved each other did. But he didn't even like her. And she knew he certainly didn't trust her.
And yet she gave it to him. Days before that thing— Arval— Epimenides— was torn from from her body and mind.
Her powers and her strength had left her.
The war in Fódland had ended and the war against Those Who Slither had begun.
She'd received no reciprocation of feelings. Nothing more than his uncomfortable stare.
So why was it he'd ensured her rest and recovery from their final battle be undertaken in his very own home?
