Summary
“Douse your tempers, Ser.” Barristan Selmy reminded him once more. “You swore an oath to the king the day he knighted you. You must honor it. Don’t act rashly just yet, your father would not approve of it.”
“What should I do then, Ser Barristan?” Jon asked with despair.
“Stand by your family, wait for Lord Stark.” He counseled. “And remember your vows.”
Ser Barristan had once been his hero, now not one of his words could bring him any comfort. Unbesought, Jon’s fury flared back to this knight in white, as shining as dawn. “As you stood beside Mad Aerys when he murdered my grandfather? My uncle? How idly did you stand then, ser? How straight was your back?”
He might as well have slapped him in the face. Barristan the Bold turned back a step. He spoke flatly, “Still, you and your family are in my prayers.”
“You may keep them to yourself,” Jon told him. “I was a bastard before I was a knight. And I remember my vows.”
