Shane's immediate deflection of his eyes, which is quickly and obediently reversed by a gentle tug, answers the probe.
“Is it the outfit? Because if so, you have no reason to be,” he continues, hiking his knee up further to keep Shane supported while letting his hands roam, supporting his claim.
“Is so pretty on you, Hollander, actually, no, I say that wrong, you make it so pretty,” he says, meaning it so wholeheartedly his chest begins to ache.
“I didn't think you’d be into this sort of thing…” Shane admits, his tone now more exploring than ashamed, though still truly struggling to look Ilya in the eye, even with the stimulation keeping his body and mind present.

“Oh!” Harris says, holding up his hand and showing off the plastic device from earlier—it’s a black oval shape with a bright yellow, raised circular button in the center. “This is a clicker. It’s used for training for dogs. When Sadie does something good, you click and then give her a treat or praise. It’s to indicate she did something good! Positive reinforcement and all that jazz.”
“And if the dog is bad, then what?” Shane asks before he can stop himself. Ilya shoots him a curious look, one that asks why do you care? And it’s a fair question–it’s not like they’re planning to discipline Anya in any way. But Shane honestly doesn’t know why he’s so intrigued; he just is.

Shane leaned in so that his mouth was now right on Ilya’s ear, stilling his movements. “I said,” he breathed hotly, “you like it? Being my dog?”
And this was new. The words sent an electric shock down Ilya’s spine, making him involuntarily thrust up into Shane. Ilya swallowed, closing his eyes and nodding furiously, as Shane nibbled on his ear lobe and sucked sweetly at the skin there.
“Speak,” Shane said simply, the same tone he used when talking to Chiron or Anya. When talking to dogs.
“Fuck,” Ilya choked out. “Yes, da, yes, I like being your dog.”

Summary
There is a thing Shane wants. Forgiveness, absolution, a way out of his imagined sin. But at the same time, he cannot accept the desire, can’t look at it head on. Will stall forever in the hair-shirt stage, causing himself pain, because he stubbornly refuses to create for himself any path towards atonement.
This is fine. Repressed desire, unconscious craving for release. Ilya can work with this. Might even call it his area of expertise.

After the Centaurs lose in the playoff semi-finals for the second year in a row, Ilya has to save Shane from himself.

Ilya knows firsthand that the world isn’t comfortable. It’s loud, bright, demanding, a harsh place in direct opposition to everything he’s recently learned about autism.
Is it so wrong that he wants Shane to feel safe here? To carve out a space where, even if only for a few hours, he doesn’t have to grin and bear anything? He can just be?
Or: Ilya Rozanov has a lot of good ideas. Telling his fuck buddy that he should consider getting an autism diagnosis isn’t one of them.
