Summary
Henry swipes away useless ads and news articles. Right when he’s about to lock his phone and toss it onto the cushion beside him, he sees it - a Ring app notification, with a timestamp that reads now.
Henry taps on it quickly, with more strength than expected. The phone flips out of his hand and lands in his lap, dangerously close to David’s snout. The beagle huffs, turning his face a bit further away from Henry’s belly. Henry pets softly behind his ears in apology, then picks his phone back up eagerly.
The joy that radiates through Henry momentarily at the first sight of Adonis is immediately replaced with dread once Henry actually looks at the man. His curls look unruly, more so than usual, as if he’s been brushing his fingers through them. His jaw has a tight and uncomfortable-looking clench to it, and he’s not looking directly into the camera this time.

When the guy finally turns, it feels a little like Liam has been sucker punched in the chest. The guy is possibly the most striking person he’s seen in real life.

It’s not that he thought Alex was lying about having a boyfriend, but he’d always been this amorphous blob in Liam’s mind—like this intangible thing that was real but he couldn’t see. Now, though? Alex blinks down at his hands again, studying the lines more carefully. The marks are faded, like they were made days ago, and they’re not painful so much as irritated, like they weren’t made by his own hands. He touches one of the marks, and there’s only the slightest sting in response.

It hits him like a slap in the face, his breath catching in his throat. He pushes back from his desk and stares at his skin for so long that he gets a little cross-eyed.
