It wasn’t the prospect of pain that frightened him. Zhenya was a hockey player: he was used to pain, even to violence. But this wasn’t like a fight on the ice—tempers boiling over, hot rage spilling out everywhere—cathartic, necessary, even if it got him sent down the tunnel. This was different. There was nothing here to push back against, no way to assert his own will. In a little while Crosby would come to him, and Zhenya would open the door and let him in. Crosby would feed from him, taking what he wanted from Zhenya’s body.
And then they would be bound.

Summary
Everyone knows that omegas might not be banned from playing in the NHL, but they never get drafted. So when Otter presents as an omega, he kind of just…ignores it. Everyone thinks he’s a beta, and he lets them. He develops a system that works, gets drafted by the Dallas Stars, and goes about his life living his dream.
Mush is an alpha who maybe takes that role more seriously than even hockey. He’s 30, unmated, and maybe a little in love with his best friend, but it’s totally fine. It’s manageable. At least it was, until Otter’s suppressants failed unexpectedly. Now a lot of the quiet parts of his life are becoming very loud.

The first time James meets Paulie he literally runs into him in the hallway. He's late for class, just woken up, with a pop tart shoved hastily into his mouth for breakfast, and his clothes are sort of only half on, shoes unlaced. He makes a muffled noise of apology before he looks up and actually sees Paulie, who's wearing glasses and looking bemused, and then James chokes a little and sprays crumbs all over Paulie, who steps back in alarm. James takes the remnants of the pop tart out of his mouth and says, "Shit, sorry, that's gross, I'm really sorry, just kinda in a hurry, you know? Slept in, so now I'm late for class, and-- hi. I'm James."
