People tend to forget easily that Abel had been the first human to die—the first ever winner. His death hadn’t been swift, nor was it painless, and waking up in Heaven had been disorienting and stressful. Learning he couldn’t go down to the garden to visit his mother was, by far, the worst part.
So he gets where Pentious is coming from. He has people he loves up here now, of course; Peter and Emily, for one.
But Pentious doesn’t have that, yet. He may not ever, admittedly. Emily wasn’t kidding when she said that no one up here was quite like Pentious.
But Abel doesn’t want him to feel alone.

A moment of silence passes between them, and Danny listens to the idle sounds of the Batcave in motion. The murmured conversations, the impact of fists on punching bags, the actual bats hanging from the cave ceiling. It’s calming. Comforting, even. It’s home.

He’s not looking at Jason, but he can hear the affectionate smile in his voice as he says, “Any time, kid.”
“I’m not that much younger than you, y’know,” Danny grumbles, scrunching his face up.
“Still younger than me,” Jason responds, “still a kid.”
“What does that make Damian?”
“An infant.”
“I heard that, Todd!”

Danny will be the first person to admit that his relationship with pain is strange.
The first year or so after the portal accident, the constant migraines and muscle spasms had him completely floored. That, on top of trying to figure out how to manage his newfound powers, had him feeling overstimulated and exhausted every second of every day. It was awful.
Now, it’s mostly a footnote. The chronic pain is so consistent that it’s mostly faded into the background of his life these days, and he doesn’t even really notice it until it gets particularly bad.
Today definitely falls into the particularly bad category.

Not 30 seconds after he hits send, his phone buzzes with an incoming call from Jazz's phone number. He kind of feels like he's going to throw up, if he's being honest, but still, he takes a few deep breaths before answering.
"Hello?" he says, shakily.
"Danny," Jazz says on the other end, breathless and relieved. "Oh, God, I've been so worried about you. Are you okay? Where are you?"

It quickly peters out when he thinks about Jazz and Ellie, and how much he misses this sort of easy sibling banter. Sure, the Bats are a little chaotic, a little messy, but certainly no more so than the Fentons.
At least Bruce cares about his kids.

Jason can see the way everyone shifts uncomfortably at “particularly traumatic deaths,” and he knows immediately that they’ve all sussed out how exactly Danny had died. It’s hard not to notice the lichtenberg figures scarring his entire left side, after all—for fuck’s sake, they glow a bright green when he’s Phantom.
Luckily, nobody brings it up. He does watch, though, as Steph’s hands curl into fists in an attempt to reign in her anger—as Bruce sets his jaw in an attempt to bite his tongue. Jason is sure he’s already making contingency plans in his head for if the Fentons ever show up in Gotham in search of their son.
Jason understands the feeling. He’s got a sniper with Jack and Maddie Fentons’ names carved into the barrel back at home.
And no, he does not mean that figuratively.

He’s always hated going home to Piedmont at the end of summer. People never understand him back in California; he’s always been the weird one, the kid that gets picked on and pushed around.
It doesn’t help that most of the kids in his grade have known him and Mabel since they were in elementary school—they’d known Dipper back when he and Mabel still told people that they were identical.
They’re still technically identical, but they don’t broadcast that fact anymore—not since Dipper came out.
