A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”

And this makes her want: the way Caitlyn is sitting like she’s above it all, glasses now nestled in her hair, eyes sharp and nightgown nearly transparent. Vi is daring Caitlyn to react, if only by the subtle shift of her hips.
“Do you want to touch me?” Caitlyn’s voice is clear as water as it cuts across the room — abrupt and mercifully direct. She closes her book.
Vi says, helplessly, “Yes.”
