“The point is,” he starts again, slowly, “that you’ve decided at some point in your life you want to… stick with me, for some reason. Okay. Cool. But it was a long time ago. I’ve changed. You’ve changed. I’ve said this before, it’s not—not your responsibility to bear with me, it’s not another duty.”

He opens his eyes and turns his face to take a proper look at Satoru by his side. He’s watching him, patiently waiting for the words to leave his mouth.

“You insist on staying by my side. But I don’t expect that from you,” he whispers, shaking his head. “I would understand if you’d left. If anything, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t.”

Satoru shifts closer to him with a quiet sigh, until their noses are touching and their breaths mingle together. Their hands find each other under the blankets.

“You were never a duty. You’ve never felt like a duty to me. You should never feel like one. I shouldn’t have let that happen.” His pupils are dilated. “And I never made any decision. It made itself. My feelings, everything I say, it’s true. It’s the reality. I can’t imagine it ever changing."

    Summary

"What did you feel when he told you I was gone?" Satoru's voice is barely a whisper.

The answer should be as simple as the question is. But he's having a hard time forming words in his mouth, as he feels Satoru's thumb gently stroke his skin.

"I was... scared. Frightened. And like... very, very empty. I don't remember much to be fair. Messed up my head."

"What would you do if it turned out I really dropped dead?"

"I... don't know." I wouldn't be here right now, he thinks. "Why are you asking me all these questions?"

Satoru shrugs, gaze never leaving his face, gentle hand never leaving his jaw. "I said, don't be dumb."
