“Come on Lahan, admit it,” a noisy bureaucrat from the Board of Rites teases during one of those social gatherings. “You have to be relieved that the apothecary girl didn’t choose to move in the family’s estate.”
Lahan brushes the subject aside. “I assure you our family is immensely proud of my esteemed sister’s achievements in the medical office. I can only be supportive of her decision to prioritize her career.” For the sake of boyhood, though, he relents, “I’ll admit she is a handful.”
Or: They are not biological siblings. They weren’t raised together, or in the same way. In fact, if Maomao had any say in this, there would be no family ties to speak of. And yet, at times, when certain stars align and precise cards are dealt, Fate has the La blood speak louder than their personal preferences.

Summary
Maomao the ferocious yaoguai lives a peaceful life in isolation, playing with poisons and feasting on the hearts of men.
That all changes when one human dares to venture a little too close to her haven.
No human stupid enough to disturb her territory can be allowed to live – any man foolish enough to encroach on a demon’s land is an affront to all members of her species.
Unfortunately for Maomao, she will soon find out that this one man is not so easily disposed of.
