Summary
Jo paces around the kitchen, watched closely by his dog. He’s muttering under his breath every so often, and Mallow seems vaguely interested. Mallow is still laying down, of course, always lazy, but his head is perked up as if curious whether Jo’s mood is one that will lead to a trip to the dog park. Mallow loves the dog park. Jo notices Mallow’s gaze and sighs, shaking his head.
“Not today, buddy,” he says softly. Mallow whines, making Jo even more disappointed in himself - he can’t even make his own dog happy. “The thing is,” he says aloud, sort of directed at Mallow but mostly directed toward himself, “there’s other things in Colorado, you know? Denver is a big city. Well, it’s a city, I don’t think it’s that big. Anyway, there’s more to it than just Nate.”
Mallow cocks his head at Jo. Jo didn’t say the word ‘park’ or anything close to it, which is the only word Mallow really cares about aside from ‘treat’ and ‘walk’.

Summary
Leaving Halifax was like the iceberg had finally pulled away into its own, cleaving from its remains, in whom it had rooted so deeply that you could not pry them apart, like when you put your tongue on a cold pole and it won’t come off. Being apart from Nate, from the Mooseheads, well, it was uncharted territory, and Jonathan Drouin was not interested in recon.

Summary
Nate grabs the mail on the way up to his condo, rifling through it to see if anything interesting is there. A couple of bills, a lot of junk, and a wedding invitation. Cale had mentioned these were going out soon, so Nate’s not surprised to see it. What is surprising, though, is the way it’s addressed; curling script along the front has Nate’s address fully correct, of course, but the name on it is unexpected. Or, rather, the names. Mr. Nathan MacKinnon and Mr. Jonathan Drouin.

Summary
The quiet is deafening as they file off the ice. Nate can’t concentrate on anything - he knows he’s supposed to lift his stick up to thank the fans cheering for them despite their failed season, but he can barely manage to stay on the ice for the extra minute. He throws his stick on the bench as hard as he can before stomping down the tunnel. It’s not exactly captain behavior, but there’s a reason he’s not the captain.
He gets to the locker room, slams his helmet in his stall, drops his gloves to the ground, and sits. He buries his head in his hands, knowing he won’t be able to stop the flow of tears. Nate takes a few deep breaths, trying to hold himself together. He’s exhausted from playing a game and a half, angry at himself for not covering Duchene and allowing him to score, pissed that his season - the season that broke records - is over without a win at the end of it, and heartbroken that he couldn’t be better for some of the other guys on the team.
