He stares blankly at her. "Are you stupid? I just said I didn't want anybody's help."
"You said you didn't want me to get Shidou. That's different than not wanting my help, isn't it? Please, Fuuta-kun?"
It's a little selfish, but maybe she wants the chance to prove to herself that she can be useful. That she can try and do something for someone without hurting him.
And… besides, Fuuta seems like the type who could use it. People being nice to him more often, that is.

Summary
The best thing he could do for himself would be to rush out of the café and forget all about it.
Twelve years ago, a chance encounter occurred between one Fukuzawa Yukichi and a fourteen year old Edogawa Ranpo. Their paths crossed, but did not connect. Ranpo was left alone with nowhere to go and nothing to his name, save for the clothes on his back and a measly business card. Or he was, until bumping into none other than Mori Ougai, a back-alley doctor who claimed he could use an apprentice.
Eleven years ago, Fukuzawa Yukuchi intervened and took Yosano Akiko under his wing, preventing her from falling into Mori's custody. Staring back at the cold green eyes of the fifteen year old standing next to Mori, he felt sick. He would not let another lost child slip from his grasp and fall into the Port Mafia's. Continuing to work as a bodyguard, he brought Yosano with him and formed a formidable team that later grew into the Armed Defense Agency, a gifted organization built to help protect and defend the public.

It’s not exactly what Kaoru means to come out of his mouth, it sort of just happens. See, they’re at the beach together— something that happens not infrequently, since Kaoru sort of likes having company whenever he has the free time to take his surfboard out— and it’s just that, after the millionth time watching Kanata splash around in the shallows, he’s sort of starting to wonder.
He’s also sort of starting to regret asking the question, because Kanata is staring at him like he’s just grown a second head.

“'I… I don’t understand,' Yuno whispers. The dark shape on the floor dances to the wheelchair in the corner. The air looks warmer if Fuuta squints. Softer.
'She told you, right?' Fuuta looks to Yuno, then back to the corner. The shadow is gone. 'Her boyfriend. She was following him, and she failed. That was what she believed in, remember?' Mahiru sits in the wheelchair, her elegant wedding gown obscured by darkness. She’s beautiful, like an angel. She’s at peace. She makes him want to die too."
The prison is a lot darker in Mahiru's absence. Darkness looks different to Fuuta than it does to other people now. He and Yuno talk about it, about things lost, and about things missed out on.

Tenshouin turns to dig through his bag, and after a moment he produces a small stack of papers, neatly bound at the right. He places it between them, and Chiaki stares down at it, unseeing.
“Um, Tenshouin-kun? What is this?”
Tenshouin chuckles. “It’s a contract. Since I’m the president of the student council now, I can easily make any arrangements necessary, so this is the perfect time to ask: will you form a unit with me?”
It started with a little smile.
