It's a remarkable fluke that Earth has managed: sending one scientist into space on one-way trip only to discover him back in the solar system after three decades, and sending an entirely different astronaut for a circuit up to Mars and back just for disaster to strike and he's left stranded alone on the planet. Wilder still that the timelines align, and both space-farers end up on the same ship back home.

Someone could make the case for smuggling—it would be interesting if they got her on piracy. She turns to give her final good-byes, and her heart stops.
“Ryland Grace, you are under arrest.”

The laws of entropy insist that natural systems always move to a state of constant disorder, constant change, constant expansion. You would not know any of this if you meet Eva Stratt, because as shocking as she may seem to the average person, she is achingly predictable. It is not her fault if her choices are unforgivable in the eyes of the law, or the UN, or someone’s deadbeat uncle cursing over his phone. They should not have expected anything different.

Mindy Park is rapidly realising that the first intelligent extraterrestrial to make contact with the human race thinks they’re fucking stupid. She’s pretty sure that Dr Grace isn’t accurately translating half the things Rocky is saying, but most of what he is telling her is that Rocky has a better way of doing what NASA wants them to do, and honestly, it seems like Rocky is mostly right. She probably doesn’t want to know what the other half of what Grace’s new alien friend is saying, if the things that are making it through what she’s calling the “middle school teacher filter” are “why would you do something the dumb way when you could do it the right way”.
or,
Mindy has a headache, Grace has trauma, Mark is confused and Rocky is wondering how humans made it in to space when they're all so, so dumb.
