And there Gabe was, frail-looking yet just as pretty as he's always been. He was laying on his side, eyes closed and lashes fanning over his cheeks. His hands were curled into loose fists and pulled into his chest, like he was hugging himself. Or worse, he was pretending someone was holding him.
David almost hoped it was the latter so that he'd have an excuse to feel the warmth of Gabe against his chest. Just to remind himself that the boy was so, so alive. And maybe to also soothe the loneliness that pricked at his chest whenever Gabe wasn't around.
