Summary
Eddie’s terrified. The weight lodged in his chest has shifted to complete and utter panic. His skin is hot. His eyes are burning. There was once a time when he’d say, I do not panic, but even that was a lie. Eddie panics a lot, actually. But he’s been taught how to manage it, how to make himself Jello, how to bring himself back to reality.
But this reality is what’s panic-inducing, and he can’t Jello himself out of this one.
Because he’s not scared for himself. Eddie’s killed men before. More than four at a time. Eddie’s, objectively, been in worse situations than this. Eddie’s been shot and stabbed and buried.
But he’s never been in a situation like this, with a four-year-old who means the world to him, a four-year-old who’s Buck’s son.

“I’m not his husband.”
“Virtually,” Maddie repeats like it changes anything.
“What does that even mean?” Eddie protests weakly, his back to her so he doesn’t see through his lies. “We’re just friends.”
Maddie sighs, so loud that Eddie has no choice but to turn around to face her. When he does, her gaze pierces right through him, telling him lying will not get him anywhere.
“Eddie. If you think no one can see the way you look at him, you’re delusional.”

Summary
The Frontier is a good truck. He knows that. Reliable, practical, decent on gas for its size — Buck had done research before he bought it, had shown Eddie a spreadsheet, an actual spreadsheet, color-coded, and Eddie had looked at it and then looked at Buck and thought something very specific that he hadn’t been ready to name yet either. That was before. This is after. The point is; the truck is good.
But it’s not Buck.
