It was two weeks after He left her for the final time, when it sunk in that he wasn't coming back, when the first petals appeared. She coughed, and the red in her hand briefly looked like blood until she dropped it, the petals fluttering to the floor. Seesai had a word for the disease, Hanahaki. Though other places called it simply “broken heart syndrome”.
For Fang Sarnai, it was slow. Some days there was hardly even a petal, those days when she could almost forget that He existed in the first place. She could've been cured, had He bothered to come back. Give her closure if nothing else, stop her heart from breaking more as she waited, not knowing if he ever actually cared for her. But he didn't come back. It took just over a month. By the end, entire blooming roses were coming out of her lungs. They suffocated her, tore her organs to pieces. There was nothing that could be done.

Sandrock’s star builder has fallen for Fang. Fang is scared of hurting her and terrified of losing her, especially to the same disease that took his mother, so he hides his feelings hoping to spare hers.
