Summary
As rare as visitors to this region are, adventurers do still pass through Mira’s library. She’s heard any number of tall tales from groups convinced they’ll be the ones to crack the secrets of the ruins in the far north or fell the great beasts in the forests, and some of them even live to tell the tale, but they rarely ever come back. They either find whatever they need from her records and move on or they simply disappear.
Mira rarely ever gets to hear the ends of their stories. She helps them write the prologue and then they leave.
Mira is the long-suffering owner of Pilgrim Books, a remote village library in an area surrounded by ancient ruins and dangerous wildlife, and Rumi seems to be incapable of returning her books on time.

Summary
Running through the rest of her list, she found that every box had been checked. The only thing left to do was cook dinner, with ingredients she already prepped in neat little containers in the fridge.
All of her mise was en place, yet the frustrating feeling of a dropped ball remained.
She refreshed her email, again.
Checked the time, again, before deciding she had had enough.
She closed her mail application only to find a notification lingering on her desktop.
A reminder.
Reminder: take the rest of the week off for rut

Summary
“You can put the pan down Zoey, she won’t hurt you.”
Zoey looked at the demon standing in her living room. Then at Mira’s rigid posture. Then back at the demon again.
Rumi’s smirk widened. She turned her head just enough to catch Zoey’s eye, then snapped her teeth lightly at the air, almost playful, flashing the sharp edge of her small fangs.
“No,” Zoey whispered, clutching it tighter. “I don’t think I will.”
Or
When her best friend’s apartment is “haunted,” paranormal investigator Mira discovers the poltergeist is actually her chaotic demon ex, who’s been pranking Zoey just to get Mira’s attention back. Apparently “no contact” doesn’t apply when you dated a creature who treats breakups like a challenge.

Summary
Mira is easy to piss off. Zoey likes to tease. It's a recipe for disaster, really—or something else entirely—and that's exactly what happens when the girls get home from the fansign crashed by the Saja Boys, abominations made up by the internet freshly burned into Mira's mind and Zoey all too willing to poke the bear. Suffice to say, Zoey gets exactly what she asks for. And all the while, Rumi is still hiding.

Summary
The irritation already simmering under her skin surged hot enough that the scathing response was halfway up her throat in an instant.
Then she actually looked at the woman, brows pulled as her lips dropped into a sneer—and promptly forgot every single thought in her head.
Oh.
The woman standing in front of her was, quite frankly, unfairly beautiful.
She wore a zoo uniform polo over a long-sleeved compression shirt, paired with shorts that Mira was reasonably certain violated at least several workplace regulations regarding inseam length.
For one briefly catastrophic moment, Mira suddenly understood why “sexy zookeeper” had been on that Halloween costume list Zoey’d scrounged up last year. Then she immediately shut that thought down before it could do any permanent damage.
__________
Mira understood bees—and Zoey, sometimes. Other people? Not so much. She had only agreed to give a conservation talk to raise awareness, not spend the whole day distracted by the zoo's resident butterfly keeper.
Unfortunately, said butterfly keeper was very pretty.
