The fact that he had failed to notice this in the first place was a proof enough of the insubstantiality of the progress he’d made over the years. The progress he thought he had made.
Because how else, do you get so shaken up, no matter the circumstances that you do not notice the one person who’s the reason you turned into a shell?
The irony of this dissociation wasn’t lost on him.

He wanted to scream.
His ass of a father fucking off to wherever he’d disappeared to all those years ago wasn’t a want though, it was sine qua non.
