Summary
It was supposed to be a simple mission. Slip into Ghost City under a disguise, and pick up information on the supposed ‘leader’ of the damned place. Being the distanced civil official that he was he had the technical knowledge on how to blend in and where to find the tidbits of information that would be most pertinent to him– More accurately, to his mission. None of this really pertained to him, personally– He had no need to hear the gossip of a city full of ghosts and demons.

Summary
The moon shone bright through the windows– He Xuan didn’t often close the curtains anymore, at least not until the sun rose and began to reflect off the panes of glass, so much so that even the dark gray of the walls couldn’t dampen the glow. It was by that point that He Xuan would return from work, anyhow, and draw the curtains, fasten them closed and lay down without a second thought, hoping to stay blissfully unconscious until the alarm clock shocked him awake again, the sun now setting and the curtains coming apart once more.
The moon tonight, though, was full– Lighting up the entire room nearly as much as the sun, though not nearly as warm. In a twisted sense of irony, the most warm thing in the room was also the source of the chill that seeped into He Xuan’s very bones, making home in his marrow as if it could become part of his blood, circulate the spectral cold through him with every beat of his sick, longing heart.

The pounding in Philippe’s heart grew ever harder, until it overtook the sound of his own harsh breathing, the roaring of blood in his ears becoming louder and louder still. He knew the hunter had to be close– The panic those.. Things, they could no longer be called human, with the way they towered over the survivors, their inhuman features- inspired in him, intrinsically, as if some baser power was telling him to run, to hide– As if the fear was engrained into his bones and was a part of him. It told him that the hunter was getting closer, that he ought to back off and get away from the cipher– But it was nearly done. They’d already lost Galatea, when there was still four ciphers to go, and they were down to two now. The tinny little robotic voice on the communicator rang out that the other survivor’s cipher was only at twenty percent, and if Philippe could just finish this, then he could run–

Summary
Despite being a ghost, He Xuan kept the bed warm enough that it didn’t disturb Qingxuan’s sleep. It was only when he’d been gone from it for long enough that the bed began to grow cold that Qingxuan would wake up, bleary eyed and aching as they tried to source out exactly where the ghost king had slunk off to. Usually as their wits returned to them, they could parse out that he was in the kitchen or the study of their small home, or if he was out of the house entirely.
They noticed a small piece of paper hanging from it- Upon closer inspection, it seemed to be a note. The handwriting, as expected, was neat and tidy.
Needed in Ghost City. Left early. Will be home in the evening. -HX
Or-- A chilly day gives Qingxuan the perfect opportunity to have a pleasant surprise waiting on He Xuan at home.

Summary
Not for the first time, He Xuan was sure that he had finally snapped and entered a state of psychosis.
He'd been warned about hallucinations, after the prison sentence- In fact, it was the first thing that the government-mandated therapist had mentioned to him. She'd been right, actually- The people disappearing around corners and hints of laughter when he was fully alone had become part of his routine, and he tended to ignore anything that couldn't be explained by a trick of the light, or mishearing another, normal noise in the distance. It wasn't worth it to drive himself crazy– Crazier– over something like a few shadowy figures or some strange noises.
That being said, there was no way he hadn't lost it this time.
“Helllooooo? I can see you jump every time I talk, I know you can hear me!” The voice called out again, louder this time and close enough to his ear to be painful. He did flinch back at the noise, but gave no other acknowledgement to what he was sure was simply the most intense hallucination he'd had to date. If he just ignored it, it'd most likely fade out as he got to work– And gods, did he have work to do.
