    Summary

The first sign of things being incredibly strange is that Bill phones him. Joel and Bill don’t talk on the phone. Joel talks to Frank sometimes, because Frank still worries about him, but his communication history with Bill can be summed up in text messages shorter than ten words, and the occasional chain email about some kind of conspiracy Bill sends him that he deletes without opening.

Or: Another foster care au! With, uh, a twist?

    Summary

The first time she comes barreling into the house like the devil’s on her heels, he’s on his feet with his gun in hand at once, stepping between her and the door, sure an intruder is about to burst through after her. He readies himself for a fight, already planning how to get an attacker out of the house and away from Ellie.

And then he hears her laughing.

He turns to see her, panting and sweaty, laid out on the floor like she’s a rug, her face practically glowing with the force of her smile. She lifts both hands to the air in fists and cheers.

“What are you doing,” he asks, but the question comes out flat in light of his confusion. He gives the door one more look, but no intruder is imminent, and he holsters his gun, going to one knee beside Ellie, still on her back, breathing hard.

“I beat it!” She says, clearly proud about whatever the hell she’s talking about.

    “Beat what?” He asks.

    “Curfew!” She nearly crows.

    He blinks.

It’s possible they’ve had a misunderstanding about what exactly a curfew is.

    Summary

Joel couldn’t say the real reason he needed Sarah to stay home that night. You were in a fucking sundress with a ribbon in your hair. A goddamn ribbon. And you’d been cooking, the whole house smelled like heaven and you were in a fucking sundress with a goddamn ribbon in your hair and now he was going to be home alone with you all night.
Not that anything was going to happen. Nothing was going to happen. Not a damn thing.

    ***

You're a college student in Austin, Texas, who gets a summer job nannying Sarah Miller. It's not long before her dad sees you as more than a babysitter - or more than a friend. But life - and an apocalypse - have other plans.
