Sweet couldn’t say how long they stay there, breathing each other in, the sun low on the horizon but never dipping beneath it; painting the sky pink, red, gold. Behind them, the chatter of their friends. In front of them, the low-lit scatter of detritus, of a life lived- well or not, who knows- pressed flat to the earth. The deep depression of a well. The turn of the soil, pushed up by the earthworms. Up, up, up. Her fingers skitter up Kung Fu’s arm once more, little earthworms, pressed into the soft flesh of her bicep, rolling over her shoulder.

Shouko was meant to heal people. She was meant for it, everyone said, and she was taught how. She was taught everything she could ever need for fixing people, damaged, near-dead, hearts-of-gold sorcerers. They didn’t teach her about grief, so she didn’t grieve. They didn’t teach her about love, either—but she figured that one out on her own, without the bickering of Getou and Gojo next to her, without the ache in the divots of her spine when she dreamed about things that apathetic girls shouldn’t dream about. It wasn’t so bad, was it? Doing her job, dreaming on the side, and being what they needed her to be. It worked.
(or: she’s more or less not cut out for anything other than fixing. something about rarity, something about standards. she more or less stops listening, unless it’s utahime talking.)
