“Are we friends?” Grace asks. The question doesn’t feel quite right. “Or, I guess… were we friends?”
Yáo hums, thinking. “Yes,” he says, after a moment’s contemplation, “I would like to believe that we were - are - friends.”
Grace turns his head, then, and Yáo knows exactly where he’s looking. “Are you two friends?”
“Yes,” Yáo’s voice is lower this time, tinged with an emotion Grace can’t place. “We are good friends.”

Grace and Yáo both wake up prematurely. Grace grapples with trying to remember his purpose. Yáo grapples with the absence of Ilyukhina.)

Summary
Stranded at 40 Eridani with his best friend — who has too many legs and absolutely no concept of minding his own business — Grace has made peace with life on Erid. Then Rocky runs the numbers. The numbers are bad. Grace is declining, slowly but certainly, despite Rocky's best efforts.
Rocky's solution is exactly what you'd expect: massive, meticulous, and completely non-negotiable. A new ship. A diplomatic delegation. Six years of travel with the only family he has left — which, Grace privately admits, is the first thing that's made going home feel possible. And one small additional item Rocky mentions almost as an afterthought: the thrum has determined that Grace requires a mate, and they have assigned it diplomatic priority.
Grace has a lot of feelings about this. Rocky is unmoved.

“What is a ‘field trip’?”
The unexpected question makes me stop in my tracks. I stumble over my own two feet and almost bite my own tongue which is a new low, even for me. If I keep going like this I am never going to beat the clumsy human allegations. At least Rocky is not here. If he’d witnessed my latest embarrassing blunder he would have found ways to tease me about it for a week straight. It’s unfortunate that my class has to see me like this but they are a lot more forgiving and understanding of their ungraceful teacher than my best friend. A fact I like to hold over his head from time to time.
Not that he cares. He maintains that he’s earned the right to mock me as much as he likes after having to watch me stumble and fall repeatedly over the same threshold for four years.
And maybe he’s not wrong.
Don’t ever tell him I said that.

There is no way Grace can take the pebbles on a field trip. At least not without help.
