Grace startles back as if burned, but he can’t go far with Simon’s hold still pressing him down. “Simon, please,” he whispers. “You don’t have to do this.”
That’s the thing Grace just doesn’t understand. Simon does have to do this. It’s the only way to sooth the itch under his skin, the urge to settle the score one way or another.

“I’m just teasing,” Simon says, voice gentler. Almost apologetic. Definitely still more amused than Ryland cares for. “I’m more surprised than anything.”
The sentence hangs alongside the rush of the shower, bouncing around the side of the tub. Bouncing around inside Ryland’s far too curious brain. Ryland sighs. “Why?”
Simon doesn’t point out the way his voice cracks, a small mercy. “Wasn’t sure you even bothered with lowly things like…in-flight self service.”

Wherein Ryland Grace and Simon unexpectedly find themselves on Earth after a long life on Erid. The discovery of the Petrova Line hasn't happened yet, and neither has the disastrous fight that left Colt unwilling to talk to Grace years before Stratt shipped him off to space.
Grace just wants to fix things with Colt before he works to get back to his Eridian happily ever after. Meanwhile, Simon isn't sure about any of this.

Ryland looked down at his clipboard, where he had written a reasonable script, supplied earlier that day by Adrian. Unfortunately, the moment his eyes landed on the words, his brain supplied only terrible ways to say them.
He chose the worst one.
“I need flowers with prominent reproductive structures.”
The man went completely still.
Ryland could feel his soul attempting to leave his body.
“For a plant anatomy lab,” he added quickly. “For my students. Middle school students. Not–” He cut himself off, because there was simply no end to that sentence that would improve his situation. Instead, he just weakly smiled, and added “Science.”
