This should not have happened.
Sanji knew it, and as he was making sure to keep a cold and strong exterior, yet he cannot help but be fearful.
The last two times he had end up with an alpha in rut, it has not ended well... there had been broken bones and cracks and blood — Not his tho — Not that it was ever a question. But it had been expected, because these Alpha were weak.
Zoro was not.
And as the tangy, musky smell started to rise in this cavern, so did Sanji’s realization of the situation that was daunting on him.
"Oy, Marimo... what the fuck?!"
"What?” Zoro’s voice was raspy, too raspy, and slow. The usual sharpness in Zoro's tone was not here. "What's your problem curly brow?” The syllables were hatched.
"What do you think you're doing?!" spat Sanji.
This was a stupid question, that was just answered by a raised eyebrow.
It was clear. Zoro was in rut.

Summary
It's not the first time they've been becalmed, but it's the first due to a field of ice for as far as the eye can see. Excluding, of course, the snow and ice covered island a few leagues ahead of them. With the speed of Sanji's skywalking and his responsibility to keep the crew fed, it's only reasonable that he should be the one to go to the island to restock supplies.
Or: They sail in strange waters and encounter strange things. Sanji should have known better.

Summary
The mermaid swims up to the glass, climbing in the current until he reaches the third tier of the viewing platforms- right where Zoro is standing. Their faces align on opposite sides of the glass and Zoro feels his breath catch.
He's smiling. A charming twist of his lips as vibrant blue eyes gleam in the light of the tank. His hair halos his features, his bangs floating away and showing off an unusual set of curled eyebrows. His ears are pointed and webbed, and there's a smattering of iridescent scales across his cheeks that sparkle like freckled gemstones, accentuating the narrow cut of his jaw.
Fuck- He’s beautiful.
And then, the mermaid opens his mouth.
“I don’t qualify as a fish."
