Hooking up with some girl off an app during his last semester of college seemed like an amazing idea until the consequences of doing so started messing with his emotions and making him feel things he didn't necessarily want to feel.
Suggesting that they could be friends instead of fuck buddies is the best solution he can come up with. He could keep her in his life, at a distance of course, and not have to worry about sex making things overly complicated.

“It won’t be that bad, right?” Adora clearly saw Catra’s aggravated expression.
“Hmpf,” Catra sighed.
“Come on. It could be worse!” The smile on Adora’s face put the sunrise to shame, as always. “Maybe we’ll even get to meet other people!” Then she looked away. “Plus, we get to do it together, right?” Adora looked back at her.
She returned her smile easily. “I guess…"
Catra and Adora are off for the adventure of a lifetime! Well... at least that's what the brochure said, and they were going to be stuck out there for an entire month. However, more than what's to be expected can happen within that short time frame. Can two best friends overcome their metaphorical separation of being placed on two separate camp cabins and teams? Or will new friends... and old "friends" create a rift in between them before they can find each other again?

Denial, Jax remembers. He knows that one. It’s the first on the list, the one that clues people in that it’s developing grief in the first place. Not that he’s grieving. That was silly. And a straight up delusional take on his situation. He doesn’t grieve.

The dead can’t speak, the guilty don’t deserve to. Pomni has Thoughts™ and makes it Jax’s whole problem.

It was absolutely unremarkable. Some girl talking to herself as she explored a building that she was clearly bored of. Nothing special.
Jax… knew that voice, though. It made all of the difference. He wanted her to say something else-- he needed her to say something else. He could hear his heartbeat in his ears. In the back of his mind, he could hear a jester-looking girl laughing at something stupid he said.
(Or: After escaping the circus, Jax finds himself back in the unchanged real world. Unfortunately, the relationships he'd made-- and didn't make-- in the Circus continued to nag at him.)

Summary
Jax is definitely not beating himself up after his argument with Pomni. Why would he, when he's already told her and himself he doesn't care about anyone in the circus? He's determined to keep his actual feelings about the circus members behind the door of his bedroom, all contained to a singular corkboard on his wall.
Pomni is determined to continue being friends with Jax, even after their spat, because she knows he was lying his way through it. She's respecting his space as best as she can, until him ignoring her makes her break entirely. Can she find a way to make them be friends again, and find a way past the walls he's built up around himself?
