Just as there was someone out there for everyone. His soulmate, the person he would vow kemmering with. The person he would spend the rest of his life loving and protecting.
In Karhide, most people never wanted to meet their soulmate. It went against the Handdara principle of Nusuth. You should never know why. You should never know who is perfect for you. The only certainty is death. You ought not to be certain of anything else.
Yet, after living a life of solitude after leaving his hearth, a shameful little lump in Estraven’s heart longed for that fated connection. The absolute certainty of another individual who longed for him, just as he would long for them.

“I got a minimum of 20 laps in me. That's 19 more than you Penis!” Flash sneered making direct eye contact with Peter, grinning like he had just told the joke of the year.
“Shut up Flash, I bet Peter is gonna run double the amount of laps you do!” Ned shouted back, stepping in front of Peter protectively.

Summary
The one night stand Jim Kirk has with the Vulcan passing through Riverside is a welcome break from the monotony. It's good, very good, but so fucking weird Jim's sure he's never gonna forget it. He's not quite expecting to run into Spock again in San Francisco. A second one night stand turns into a weekend, turns into a lot of weekends, turns into Bones joking that he's living half his week at Spock's apartment.
But! But, and this is very important: they're not dating.
What also turns out to be important is Spock's job, which Jim never bothered getting the details of. Starfleet Officer and a bartender-slash-bouncer? That's fine. Starfleet Academy Instructor and cadet? ...Less fine.
