"Don’t cause a scene.” Shane keeps his voice below a whisper, eyes locked on the neckline of Ilya’s practice jersey as he places a hand on his belly. “I think my water just broke or-or I pissed myself- or- I don’t- I don’t know, but I think my contractions today have been real.” Ilya immediately stiffens, lifting his head and looking around with desperate whips of his head from side to side. “Stop– you’re making a scene, stop. It’s fine. Dr. Park said it would take hours with the first baby, even after my water breaks, we have time for you to finish practice.”

    Summary

“I want our family,” Ilya said. “I want children. Permanence, I think is the word... A life with you. More than anything.”

Shane felt his throat tighten. “I want that too.”

Ilya nodded, eyes swelling. “I know. That is why I need to say everything now. Before I lose the nerve.”

He took Shane’s hands, grounding himself. “I am trying to be strong for you. But I need you to be strong for me too.”

“I am,” Shane said immediately, almost offended.

“I know,” Ilya said. “But I need you to listen.”

    Shane nodded. “I am listening.”

“I do not want to play hockey much longer,” Ilya said quietly. “Maybe couple more seasons. And then I am done.”

    Shane stared at him. “Done?”

    “Yes.”

    “With hockey. You’re serious?”

    “Very,” Ilya said.

    Summary

“Ilya,” he clarified, wincing as he swallowed, his throat feeling like he’d eaten a fistful of glass. “I need to call Ilya.”

He fumbled around for his phone, desperately needing to hear his fiance’s voice. Together, they could figure this out. They’d make a plan. Ilya could drive with his parents from Ottawa and–

But Ilya wasn’t in Ottawa. He was in Russia.

    No.

    No.

They’d kill Ilya in Russia. They’d kill him, or arrest him, or– or–

    Oh god, they’d kill him.
    __________________________________________________________________________

A family emergency means Ilya is in Russia when Hayden's FanMail video ends up on Twitter, outing them to the entire world. It, predictably, ends horribly.
