Summary
Hans sighs, beleaguered. “Alright, fine, I’ll explain further. Now, we are made in the image of God, are we not?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And as such, we embody all aspects of the divine. But because we are mortal and flawed, we do not embody them all, and imperfectly at that. When Adam and Eve ate of the apple, they introduced sin, and that sin was made manifest in their son, Cain, the first alpha.
“With Cain, wrath and rage entered the world. Eventually, God looked down and saw that it had brought ruin to his creation and he was forced to wash the world clean. They did teach you about the Flood, I hope.”
Henry couldn’t look at him. “Yes, my lord.”
“After the Flood, in His regret, God sent a gift to mankind: omegas, who embody His grace and strength. We are to tame the wrath and rage of alphas, and to stand against them to protect the innocent should that fail. And, of course, to help repopulate the world,” he adds cheekily, then laughs a little.

Summary
“Hmm? Oh yes, take your leave. Unless, perhaps,” and the last two words are said lightly to the ceiling rather than to Henry, “you’d like to earn a little extra.”
Henry pauses. “Sir?”
“I wasn’t interested in the other services at the baths, before. But now that you’ve been sent to me, I’ve decided I could do with someone to help me wash after all. Are you up to the task?”
Oh.

Summary
Hans has seen fourteen Summers, twelve of them spent in a monastery where dull old men have little patience for a young boy's mischief. Having known only strict discipline and endless routine from childhood, Hans comes to believe that this is all life has to offer.
Then Henry, a boy of the same age, becomes a novice at the monastery, and disrupts the everlasting lull of silence. Year after year, they share tears, joy, uncertainty, and the tender ache of their growing pains.
