Summary
It's been a rough decade for Shawshank State Penitentiary, and the last thing the prison needs is an escaped convict. But, when Shelby Firmin turns up missing and the killings he was convicted of start again, it seems that's the only thing that could have happened, despite Firmin's long-time protests that, while he wasn't innocent of all charges, he was not a serial killer.
In the background, Shadow goes in for surgery, and Chaz waits for proof he's all right.

What is the UnSub trying to say? What are they hoping to accomplish?
In the background, it's Mother's Day, and Langly decides to accept Diana's invitation and visit without Reid. And he brings Frohike with him.

Aurelio's office door is anywhere he wants it to be, as long as he's been close enough to see that wall at least once before. And Idlewood's entirely appropriate caution in preventing an un-drugged Shadow from coming into contact with other patients is reasonable, but unhealthy for the patient in question. But, Aurelio has friends and business acquaintances who are just as anomalous as he and Shadow, if less inclined to inadvertent serial murder than Shadow. He can, he realises, lessen Shadow's confinement, without endangering anyone else.

This holiday season, Vexation of Spirit brings you family bullshit, with a side of murder and malfeasance.
A strange system failure at Idlewood is preventing access to parts of patient and employee records, and it falls to Langly and Kim to figure out what's happening and how to fix it, before the missing information gets someone killed. Chaz's first hint something is wrong comes when Shadow's treatment fails to match the neurologist's orders.
Reid and Alvez take on a twenty-year-old case in which the killer proudly admits to eleven murders, but has always held that two more were someone else's kills. A twentieth anniversary interview with a victim's sister reveals the last two deaths were a gay couple who didn't live together, and both came from intolerant families. Were one or both of the families involved in their deaths, or are they just as much a distraction as the other killer?
And Reid gets more people knocking on his door in two days than in most of the preceding decade.
