    Summary

Aizawa refuses to let his Problem Child travel back in time alone, even to fix a future where All for One was the victor. They go back with a plan that's more of a list, spend a year technically missing, and become rather effective vigilantes that fix some rather serious problems. And then it's time to be found, which seems to primarily result in lots of support and many hugs. Neither Izuku or Aizawa complain very much.

    MHA - favorites
Hits the right beats in the right ways — the moves are clever, the length of back flashes and other scenes hits a satisfying rhythm, and the angst/comfort/crack balance delivers without dramatization. Immersive, believable, funny, sweet, with a fantastic blend of Izuku+Aizawa teamwork dynamic, interpersonal softness with other characters, and uncommon moves (like the plot with Touya, the plan for Shigaraki, and the stuff with the Doctor’s changes). I could enjoy another 10,000 words in this fic without feeling like it was overdone!

fuckass hero (7:14pm): What did you do?

What he had to. Izuku did what he had to. Not that he was going to tell Eraserhead that, of all people, but for everyone else to note: he did what he had to, and nothing extra, nothing more. It wasn’t like Izuku had a track record for anything else, after all. He liked pissing off heroes. He liked stealing from villains. He liked warmth. He liked resting his head on the quilt his Mom made him. He liked not being sick—not that he had that opportunity very often. The point was: he did what he had to, and he did it well, and he didn’t dilly-dally doing jackshit in yellow-tape like cops and heroes did. Suck on that, Eraserhead.

(or: text conversations between a sick vigilante and a not-sick hero. and every now and then, whatever else happens inside of his house.)

Bookmarking this (and subscribing juuuust in case it ever gets bonus chaps) because I can’t imagine a world in which I don’t end up wanting to come back and reread this. I know this is gonna be one of the fics that sticks with me and itches at the back of my skull. I love the narrative style (the way he thinks, the way he describes, the way there isn’t any shying away from ‘difficult’ mindsets, the commitment to actually feeling it) and the design (the texts and calls are fun, and so is the pacing of the sentence and paragraph lengths). It’s giving a similar vibe to Lukewarmbeefstew’s “next to you, from a distance,” and it’s even more intense in terms of Izuku’s mindset and situation, which I’m loving. Very well written. I actually came here from Lukewarmbeefstew’s “the cat, the hero, and the disaster” because I decided to check out the agoraphobia tag after enjoying it so much in that fic— love how it was portrayed in this one.

You know the story. Bakugou is kidnapped from the Quirk Training Camp, despite Midoriya and company’s best efforts to save him. This, however, is not that story. In this universe, the League of Villains Vanguard Action Squad is after Pro Hero Eraser Head. All for One has waited 14 years for this moment; it’s finally time to turn Erasure on that sanctimonious fool, All Might.

Aizawa Shouta’s cooperation is not required.

Finished this last night— so bittersweet to reach the end, because I loved it so much! So much incredible detail and characterization throughout. It made the world feel rich and alive, and like the author went above and beyond (Plus Ultra)! I loved how moments from earlier on, both the angsty and the silly, continued to thread through the entire story, because they made the entire thing feel cohesive. I wouldn’t have expecting a fic with so many chapters dedicated to therapy to be so engaging and well-written, but this is EXACTLY how this kind of concept should be executed. The way ‘sciencey’ stuff was written narratively reminds me of some of the examples of good scientific narrative writing, like Suzanne Simard’s “Finding the Mother Tree” or some of the works published in the “The Best American Science and Nature Writing” series.

I’m often skeptical of OCs in fics (only because I come to fanfic specifically to read about characters from the canon), but the side character OCs provided fresh air to some of the moments that *could* have been lacking, making room for more relational development and emotional beats in the story. Loved the nurses at Kaifuku! I also adored how some of the minor characters from BNHA got incorporated, like Hoshi and Zenko <3 I fell in love with them!

Characters I didn’t expect to see so well-written and yet so different from common depictions in fanfic include: Shouta himself, Yamada, Dr. Garaki, Hawks, La Brava, and Gentle ‘Conspiracist.’ When Hawks briefly showed up at the beginning I was blown away by how, with only brief descriptions and dialogue, his character come through in 3D. Garaki was unusually-but-extremely compelling. The changes to Gentle and La Brava’s details were inspired! I don’t know if I’ve liked any depiction of Present Mic more than the one in this fic, and Shouta’s thought processes and growth were relatable and reminded me of my own journey out of the time when my mental health was at its worst. I feel like I learned a lot about mental health and writing from reading this fic.

I spent several hours the other night telling my friend, who doesn’t read fanfic and has only finished the Spots Festival arc of BNHA all about this story, and even they thought it was supremely compelling.

I also adored all of the elements that went above and beyond just writing a narrative— the Japanese words at the beginning of every chapter and the collages added even more richness. I love it when authors do things like this! It makes it feel even more like an experience, more polished.

“As you can see, the cuffs haven’t cut off whatever illusion you’re casting. You need to tell us who you are, and what kind of quirk you’ve been hit with to make you look like that.”

    “I’m… Midoriya Izuku?”

“Wrong answer. Tell us your name- Your REAL name.”

“Why do you keep saying that? I AM Midoriya Izuku!”

    “You’re not.”

    “And why not?”

“Because Midoriya Izuku died four months ago.”

    Or:

After a world-ending Virus kills everyone Izuku loves, he’s sent to a parallel universe where he’s the only one who died. The only problem is, he isn’t the same Izuku they lost- and he might not get to stay.
